From Side Spin to Straight Strikes: How Bruce Fixed His Swing Path for Good

When Bruce first came in for a golf swing evaluation, he was battling a problem many amateur golfers know all too well: a high ball flight with excessive side spin. The root cause? An overly in-to-out club path that was producing too much curvature in the air and robbing him of both distance and control.

Through some smart swing mechanics and a clever training drill, Bruce managed to transform his ball flight—neutralising his swing path and gaining more consistency than ever before. If your ball flight has a mind of its own, keep reading.

The Issue: Too Much In-to-Out, Too Much Spin

Bruce’s initial swing showed a clear pattern. His club path was too far in-to-out, meaning the club was travelling too much from inside the target line to out, through impact. While this is often an intentional move for those trying to play a draw, when overdone, it creates excessive side spin and can launch the ball with a ballooning, curving flight that’s hard to control.

Combine that with a slightly open clubface and you’ve got the recipe for a high, spinning shot that misses both ways.

The Fix: Posture Neutralisation & External Feedback

We took a focused approach to help Bruce eliminate the erratic spin and bring his swing back to a more neutral plane. Here’s how we did it:

1. Neutralising the Posture

Posture is often an overlooked element in swing path control. Bruce’s setup encouraged too much lower body sway and a disconnected rotation, contributing to his out-of-control path. By neutralising his spine angle and hip position, we gave him a more athletic, stable foundation.

This simple adjustment helped Bruce start his swing in a position where rotation could happen around his body—not across it.

2. Using a Training Bag Behind the Hips

To help retrain Bruce’s downswing path, we introduced a classic external feedback drill. We placed a bag just behind his glutes and instructed him to feel like he was touching it with his trail-side hip during the downswing. This drill encourages proper hip engagement and discourages the hips from spinning out too early—one of the key contributors to the exaggerated in-to-out path.

Focusing on glute engagement allowed Bruce to maintain his spine angle and rotate through the shot with balance and control.

The Result: Straighter Shots, Lower Flight, More Confidence

Once Bruce dialled in the movement, the changes were nothing short of transformative:

Club path became more neutral
Ball flight lowered with less curvature
Dramatic reduction in side spin
Straighter, more penetrating ball flight

This is what every golfer dreams of—shots that fly straighter, carry further, and land with predictable spin.

Why Club Path and Posture Matter More Than You Think

The golf swing is a chain reaction. A faulty club path is often just a symptom of a larger problem—typically posture or rotational mechanics. By addressing both the setup and the movement pattern, Bruce was able to regain control of his swing and start hitting shots that looked and felt professional.

If you're seeing high, curving shots and struggling to control your irons or driver, it’s time to take a closer look at your club path and body alignment.

Elevate Your Game With Smart Golf Coaching

Bruce’s story is a reminder that sometimes the fix isn’t complicated—it’s just smart. The combination of simple posture alignment and a well-placed training aid helped unlock a swing that was more efficient, powerful, and repeatable.

You don’t need to overhaul your entire golf swing to see results. With a personalised swing assessment and the right drills, you can eliminate unwanted spin, improve your ball flight, and play with far more confidence.
